Multi-media Dragon Kings Project Announces 13th Age Role-Playing Game Compatibility

The fundraising stretch goal will bring the Dragon Kings universe to the new fantasy RPG by the lead designers of 3rd and 4th edition D&D.

LAS VEGAS, NV – August 8, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced today that it has added a new stretch goal to its upcoming crowdfunding campaign: a PDF rules supplement compatible with the new 13th Age RPG from Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet. The fundraiser will launch on Kickstarter in September 2013.

“13th Age is an exciting new innovation in role-playing,” says project creator Timothy Brown. “My Dragon Kings universe is rife with possibilities for 13th Age’s ‘icon relationships’ and ‘one unique thing’ mechanics. Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet are masters of their craft, and I’m thrilled we’re going to make a rules supplement compatible with their game.”

Earlier this year, the EN World online community voted 13th Age “2013’s Most Anticipated RPG.” Following a series of popular demo events at conventions such as Gen Con, PAX East and PAX Prime, 13th Age was published by Pelgrane Press in August 2013. According to co-designer Jonathan Tweet, “Our goal with 13th Age is to recapture the free-wheeling style of old-school gaming by creating a game with more soul and fewer technical details.” More details are available at www.13thAge.com.

“This announcement is going to be great news for the 13th Age community.” says Pelgrane Press owner Simon Rogers. “Dark Sun took D&D and created a striking and original cocktail of system and setting, and I’m sure that Dragon Kings will live up to those high expectations and when 13th Age is added, it’ll be a potent brew.”

The Dragon Kings game book will be rules agnostic. Free Pathfinder and Savage Worlds PDF rules supplement will be available upon the game’s release, giving all that game system’s rules and stats to play Dragon Kings with those systems. The 13th Age compatible PDF rules supplement will be an early stretch goal for the Dragon Kings fundraising effort.

“Darren W. Pearce will be the 13th Age rules supplement’s lead designer,” says Brown. Pearce is a 13-year game publishing veteran, having worked on Joe Dever’s Lone Wolf and the Doctor Who RPG from Cubicle 7. He is a Dark Sun fan and has extensive experience with 13th Age having been a playtester and early supporter.

“I’ve been a huge fan of Tim’s work for a long time, especially the Dark Sun setting.” says Pearce. “Athas was one of those D&D worlds which took the mundane elements of fantasy and spun them into something truly fantastic, part Conan, part D&D and incredibly fun to play and run. Now to be involved in Dragon Kings is a dream come true – the synergy of 13th Age and Dragon Kings is a perfect one.”

Dragon Kings has already announced the participation of artists Gerald Brom,Thomas Baxa, and Thomas Denmark, as well as cartographer Alyssa Faden for its game book. Former Queensrÿche guitarist Mike Stone is writing the game world’s music, a key component of the game universe’s presentation.

About Dragon Kings
Dragon Kings is Timothy Brown’s ‘spiritual successor’ to his award-winning Dark Sun role-playing universe, co-designed with author Troy Denning and artist Gerald Brom for the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game. Dragon Kings is a new fantasy game world conceived and presented in fiction, art, and music simultaneously. The project will be crowd sourced and eventually expand beyond role-playing and music into comics, video, and computer games. The product launch envisions a hardbound game book, an art-intensive album-sized world gazetteer and lyrics booklet, and a full-length progressive rock CD.

Press Release: Dragon Kings Announced

DARK SUN CREATOR TIMOTHY BROWN TO MAKE ITS SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR WITH GAME BOOKS AND A PROGRESSIVE ROCK ALBUM

LAS VEGAS, NV – June 25, 2013 – Veteran game designer and musician Timothy Brown today announced that he intends to create a whole new role-playing game world titled Dragon Kings, the ‘spiritual successor’ to his popular design Dark Sun. This new world will be envisioned not only in fiction and art, but in music, as well.

“Dark Sun was innovative because we created the game world and its art simultaneously,” says Brown. “We imagined concepts and asked Brom to draw them, and Brom painted those concepts that we later described in game terms. I’m so pleased that he is collaborating with us on my new Dragon Kings universe. His first cover painting is already finished!”

“Tim has a really innovative idea with Dragon Kings,” says Gerald Brom, the original artistic creator of Dark Sun. “I don’t know of another game world that’s been created in quite this way. It’s exciting to be a part of!”

“By creating an epic story as a concept rock album, I can describe my new world in ways that have never been done before,” Brown continues. “I’ve always been a huge fan of albums like Rush’s 2112, Queensryche’s Operation Mindcrime, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. I’ve often thought, ‘if those were game worlds, I’d be playing in them!’ Gaming and music are my two passions. It’s time I combined them into a single project!”

Brown is assembling a team of writers, artists, and musicians to bring the Dragon Kings world to life. “I’ve got several great, talented people on line, and I can make some announcements on them soon. My plan is to gather the team and create the world and its music. As pieces are ready – description, art, map, sample tracks – we’ll put them up on the website so people can follow our progress.”
