Multi-media Dragon Kings Project Surpasses Kickstarter Funding Goal, Advances All Stretch Goals

LAS VEGAS, NV – October 24, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced that it has raised enough money on Kickstarter to fund the entire multi-media project.

“Our base funding goal is met, ant that’s very exciting,” says project creator Timothy Brown. “That means this project will become a reality. We will make the World Book, the Gazetteer Book, and the Dragon Kings concept-album CD and they will all be available in April of this coming year.”

The team also announced that the first stretch goal, the ‘Black Fortress Falls’ 3-song Trilogy, is already achieved because of separate interest in the project. That means all subsequent stretch goals are advanced one position, making the 13th Age PDF Rules Supplement the next stretch goal to be achieved.

“We’re thrilled to be attracting interest in the project from so many different directions,” continues Brown. “We can’t make an official announcement just yet, but suffice to say that the project’s music has attracted separate interest that pre-funds its creation going forward. That let us advance the other more game-related stretch goals so they will be easier to achieve.”

13th Age will be published by Pelgrane Press in August 2013. According to co-designer Jonathan Tweet, “Our goal with 13th Age is to recapture the free-wheeling style of old-school gaming by creating a game with more soul and fewer technical details.” Learn more at www.pelgranepress.com.

The Dragon Kings game book will be rules agnostic. Free Pathfinder and Savage Worlds PDF rules supplement will be available upon the game’s release, giving all that game system’s rules and stats to play Dragon Kings with those systems. The 13th Age PDF rules supplement is now the next stretch goal for the Dragon Kings Kickstarter that continues through November 14, 2012.

Dragon Kings Nears Kickstarter Goal, Expands Pledge Levels, Gives Rebate To International Backers

LAS VEGAS, NV – October 10, 2013 – The Dragon Kings team announced today new pledge options and a rebate offer to all international backers as its Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign nears its goal.

“We’re excited about the backer response,” says project creator Timothy Brown. “Now we want to fine-tune the outreach to make Dragon Kings more accessible to everyone who wants to experience it.”

Last week the team added three new pledge levels to the Kickstarter: Digital Gamer, Gamer of Khitus, and Champion Gamer of Khitus, at $25, $45, and $80, respectively. These give potential backers new assortments of product and provide access to the game-oriented Dragon Kings World Book at lower levels.

“We’re anxious to let people enjoy Dragon Kings the way they want to enjoy it,” says Brown. “These new pledge levels have already been well received.”

Additionally, the team announced today a new International Backer Rebate to make the project’s physical components – the World Book, Gazetteer, CD, and other items – more accessible to fans in Canada and around the world.

“International postage is expensive,” continues Brown. “It’s something a lot of Kickstarters wrestle, and no solution is perfect, but this new International Backer Rebate is our way of helping those customers get involved in Dragon Kings.”

The rebate can be taken in one of two options at the end of the Kickstarter for international backers who are getting the printed World Book as part of their rewards:

1) Cash Rebate Option. International backers get a straight rebate after the Kickstarter concludes ($10 for most, or $20 for Canadian backers)

-OR-

2) Bonus Rebate in Add-Ons Option: International backers can take an additional $10 greater than that amount in add-ons (such as print versions of the PDF rules supplements, miniatures, poster maps or other products).

“This solution got the most positive response from our forum discussion with international fans. Of course, there are several digital options for backers to get Dragon Kings as PDFs and MP3s to avoid international shipping charges altogether.”

Multi-media Dragon Kings Project Launches Kickstarter Crowdfunding Campaign

LAS VEGAS, NV – September 30, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced today that its Kickstarter crowdfunding effort is underway.

“We’ve built up an enthusiastic audience on social media that far surpasses our initial expectations,” says project creator Timothy Brown. “It’s time to offer the project up to that audience to get their direct support.”

The Dragon Kings project is a new fantasy world being conceived and presented simultaneously in fiction, art, and music. There are three primary products being offered through the Kickstarter campaign: a hardcover World Book that describes the entire world for role-playing games, a progressive metal Dragon Kings CD concept album set in the new fantasy world, and a softcover Gazetteer art book with large format images and maps.

Secondarily, backers can select a tri-fold game screen, a unique dice set, as well as full-sized poster map of the Dragon Kings world drawn by cartographer Alyssa Faden, and a poster of the iconic project painting from artist Brom. Certain pledge levels offer autographed posters and books, and even an autograph on the CD from musical director and former Queensrÿche guitarist Mike Stone.

Pledge levels are designed to give game and music fans a wide variety of options, so they can get a mix of all items in physical or digital form, depending on their interests. Says Brown, “We want to give every fan an opportunity to pick and choose among the multi-media aspects of the project. We’ve even provided a pledge level to receive everything digitally which should be especially appealing to international backers.”

The game setting is rules agnostic, supplemented by free PDF rules sets so role-players can enjoy the Dragon Kings universe with their favorite game systems. PDR rules supplements will be made for the Pathfinder and Savage Worlds games, as well as 13th Age, Fate, Numenera and others as stretch goals.

After reaching a modest funding goal, stretch goals unlock, adding a wide variety of new digital content for backers, including additional sets of songs that continue the story on the concept CD, short stories presented as ebooks and audiobooks and written by a cadre of talented fantasy authors, new adventures and supplements for the role-playing game, as well as new PDF rules supplements for existing games. All of the unlocked stretch goal content is delivered digitally, free of charge to backers at different levels.

Dragon Kings metal miniatures sets may also be unlocked as stretch goal add-ons. Three possible six-miniature sets are planned, for adventurers, enemies, and monsters, that will be available for separate purchase.

According to Brown, “Our expectation is to carry Dragon Kings much further beyond the Kickstarter, making a continuing line of additional game, fiction, art, and musical features into the future. Eventually, we want to expand into full novels, videos, comics, and computer games, but it all starts with the setting.”

Multi-media Dragon Kings Project Announces New Contributors

LAS VEGAS, NV – September 6, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced today four new contributors working on the project.

“This is a large and varied project with considerable need for writing, art, and music,” says project creator Timothy Brown. “We are glad to include these additional talented contributors.”

Cartographer Diesel, a contributor to Dungeons & Dragons projects from its earliest days, has agreed to map some of Khitus’ (the world of Dragon Kings) more dangerous locales.

Brazilian game designer Ricardo Bianconi, whose most recent project is the Pistolero RPG, joins as a concept designer. “My love for Dark Sun greatly influenced my writing career,” says Bianconi. “It’s a personal pleasure to work together with (Dark Sun co-creator) Timothy Brown!”

Artist Thomas Babbey joins to add his illustrations to Dragon Kings. Two pieces have already been presented via the project’s social media. Tom currently employs this passion in his work as a freelance illustrator and concept artist, with clients including Upper Deck entertainment, Sony Online Entertainment, Fantasy Flight Games, Cryptozoic, and Square Enix Games. According to Babbey, “Dragon Kings is easily the most exciting project I have had the chance to work. It’s a perfect blend of storytelling, fantastic visual grit and passion. When put together, all these elements combine to make something that’s wholly unique and all together special.”

Guitarist Mark Stevens lends his talents to the Dragon Kings concept CD, having already contributed tracks to the song Lotus Warriors, which was released on YouTube last week. “This is some of the best music I’ve been involved with. (Dragon Kings musical director and former Queensrÿche guitarist) Mike Stone is writing some terrific songs for the project.”

Multi-media Dragon Kings Project Announces 13th Age Role-Playing Game Compatibility

The fundraising stretch goal will bring the Dragon Kings universe to the new fantasy RPG by the lead designers of 3rd and 4th edition D&D.

LAS VEGAS, NV – August 8, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced today that it has added a new stretch goal to its upcoming crowdfunding campaign: a PDF rules supplement compatible with the new 13th Age RPG from Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet. The fundraiser will launch on Kickstarter in September 2013.

“13th Age is an exciting new innovation in role-playing,” says project creator Timothy Brown. “My Dragon Kings universe is rife with possibilities for 13th Age’s ‘icon relationships’ and ‘one unique thing’ mechanics. Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet are masters of their craft, and I’m thrilled we’re going to make a rules supplement compatible with their game.”

Earlier this year, the EN World online community voted 13th Age “2013’s Most Anticipated RPG.” Following a series of popular demo events at conventions such as Gen Con, PAX East and PAX Prime, 13th Age was published by Pelgrane Press in August 2013. According to co-designer Jonathan Tweet, “Our goal with 13th Age is to recapture the free-wheeling style of old-school gaming by creating a game with more soul and fewer technical details.” More details are available at www.13thAge.com.

“This announcement is going to be great news for the 13th Age community.” says Pelgrane Press owner Simon Rogers. “Dark Sun took D&D and created a striking and original cocktail of system and setting, and I’m sure that Dragon Kings will live up to those high expectations and when 13th Age is added, it’ll be a potent brew.”

The Dragon Kings game book will be rules agnostic. Free Pathfinder and Savage Worlds PDF rules supplement will be available upon the game’s release, giving all that game system’s rules and stats to play Dragon Kings with those systems. The 13th Age compatible PDF rules supplement will be an early stretch goal for the Dragon Kings fundraising effort.

“Darren W. Pearce will be the 13th Age rules supplement’s lead designer,” says Brown. Pearce is a 13-year game publishing veteran, having worked on Joe Dever’s Lone Wolf and the Doctor Who RPG from Cubicle 7. He is a Dark Sun fan and has extensive experience with 13th Age having been a playtester and early supporter.

“I’ve been a huge fan of Tim’s work for a long time, especially the Dark Sun setting.” says Pearce. “Athas was one of those D&D worlds which took the mundane elements of fantasy and spun them into something truly fantastic, part Conan, part D&D and incredibly fun to play and run. Now to be involved in Dragon Kings is a dream come true – the synergy of 13th Age and Dragon Kings is a perfect one.”

Dragon Kings has already announced the participation of artists Gerald Brom,Thomas Baxa, and Thomas Denmark, as well as cartographer Alyssa Faden for its game book. Former Queensrÿche guitarist Mike Stone is writing the game world’s music, a key component of the game universe’s presentation.

Renowned Fantasy Artist Thomas Denmark Joins Cadre of Talent on Multi-Media Dragon Kings World

LAS VEGAS, NV – August 1, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced today that veteran fantasy artist Thomas Denmark is contributing to the new multi-media fantasy role-playing setting.

“Thomas Denmark’s work caught my eye years ago and I’ve always wanted to work with him,” says lead Dragon Kings creator Timothy Brown. “His compositions are really compelling and draw you into the scene. He brings a great new level of imagination to our world.”

“The art on Dark Sun was a huge influence on my career,” adds Thomas Denmark, “I was excited to hear Timothy Brown was developing Dragon Kings in a similar vein and honored to be included on this project.”

Thomas started his art career working on Star Wars video games for LucasArts. His interest in tabletop games lead to doing freelance art where he established the look and feel of the A Game of Thrones CCG. He also illustrated Magic: the Gathering cards, and many popular role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. He designed and illustrated the popular card games Dungeoneer and recently Murder of Crows. He continues to design and illustrate tabletop games on the side while working as an art director at Kabam, a leading social video games company.

Dragon Kings is a new fantasy game world conceived and presented in fiction, art, and music simultaneously. “We need quite a bit of original art to bring this new world to life,” says Brown. “I’m looking forward to sharing Thomas Denmark’s art with the fans.” Denmark is the latest artist announced on the project, along with Brom and Thomas Baxa.

VETERAN DESIGNER THOMAS REID TO DESIGN PATHFINDER RULES FOR DRAGON KINGS MULTI-MEDIA GAME UNIVERSE

LAS VEGAS, NV – July 25, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced today that Thomas M. Reid will be the chief designer of the Pathfinder PDF rules supplement for its new role-playing game universe.

“We’ve intended all along to develop the Pathfinder rules for Dragon Kings,” says project creator Timothy Brown. “We just didn’t want to commit until we had the right designer to do the job. Now that Thomas has stepped forward, we’re excited to announce it and begin to move ahead with it. I’m a big fan of Pathfinder, and Thomas can really do this right!”

“Getting a chance to work on Dragon Kings, and in particular having the opportunity to meld it with such a well designed and popular roleplaying system like Pathfinder, is a true joy for me,” adds Thomas, who worked with Brown at Dungeons & Dragons publisher TSR, Inc. “Tim essentially gave me my start in the industry, and one of the first projects I worked on was part of the original Dark Sun line, so to be able to go back to our gaming roots together is going to be a blast. I’m really looking forward to this.”

Reid has contributed to numerous role-playing settings, including the Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, and Planescape lines, as well as the Star Wars and Wheel of Time games. He has also written nearly two dozen novels and short stories, including Insurrection, part of the NYT-bestselling War of the Spider Queen series, and he has developed creative content for a number of computer games, including the original Baldur’s Gate and Wizard101.

The Dragon Kings game book will be rules agnostic. Pathfinder is the second announced free PDF rules supplement that will be available upon the game’s release, giving all that game system’s rules and stats to play Dragon Kings as a Pathfinder game. It was announced earlier that Pinnacle Entertainment Group’s Savage Worlds will also get its own Dragon Kings PDF rules supplement. Other rules systems will be announced soon, and some of these may be created as stretch goals during the fundraising effort.

Pathfinder is a fantasy role-playing game that was first published in 2009 by Paizo Publishing. It extends and modifies the Revised 3rd edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game rules published by Wizards of the Coast under the Open Game License. Pathfinder is intended to be backward-compatible with AD&D version 3.5, while addressing some of its issues.

Dragon Kings has already announced the participation of artists Gerald Brom and Thomas Baxa, as well as cartographer Alyssa Faden for its game book. Former Queensrÿche guitarist Mike Stone and computer industry producer Frank Klepacki are contributing to the game world’s music, a key component of the game universe’s presentation. Thomas M. Reid is the first role-playing game professional in addition to Brown on the project.

DRAGON KINGS ALBUM PRODUCER TO BE AWARD-WINNING VIDEO GAME COMPOSER FRANK KLEPACKI

LAS VEGAS, NV – July 11, 2013 – The Dragon Kings design team announced today that veteran computer game composer Frank Klepacki has signed on to produce the album for the new multi-media fantasy role-playing setting.

“I worked with Frank on the End of Nations computer game,” says lead Dragon Kings creator Timothy Brown. “He’s a terrific guy with a phenomenal resume! Our music production and engineering are in good hands.”

“When I’m not composing for games and tv, I produce other artists in the Las Vegas area regularly,” adds Frank Klepacki, “and the opportunity to work with Tim Brown and Mike Stone to produce and engineer their musical vision to completion is right up my alley, as progressive rock has played a big part in my own musical background.”

Klepacki has a massive list of video game soundtrack and audio direction credits, including Dune, Blade Runner, the Command & Conquer series, and Star Wars: Empire at War. He has also done music for television and commercials, and won GDC Spotlight and PC Gamer awards, among others.

Dragon Kings is a new fantasy game world conceived and presented in fiction, art, and music simultaneously. “Adding music as a key design and immersive game element is an important innovation,” says Brown. “It’s essential that we get the music right, and Frank brings a lot of talent to the project.” Former Queensrÿche guitarist Mike Stone was announced last week as the Dragon Kings project’s lead musician and songwriter.
